Crystal Castles is going on tour, and playing a free show at Studio B! I’ve already seen them twice, and trust me its a show you don’t want to miss

Scarlett Johansson has an AOL Session video of her new song “Falling Down”. Its…uh…kind of painful. on Dlisted

Aaand we’re back on drugs. Check out Pete and Amy’s cracked out YouTube vids. Baby mice? I don’t even want to know. At least Pete makes a joke about Johnny Borrell and Amy uses a mouse to beg Blake not to divorce her.

FINALLY. A reality show for the rest of us hot trannys. RuPaul is on a search for Americas Next Top Drag Queen

The Raconteurs and Bon Iver have some awesome videos from their acoustic performance on Live with Jools Holland.

Are you a Morrissey fanatic and know that his birthday is coming up? Just can deal with the fact that you won’t be hearing another live show for awhile? Well, tribute band Sons and Heirs are playing May 22nd at Union Hall in celebration of Moz’s 49th bday. Music Slut has the deets.

Metallica has a new album coming out! Yay! or not yay if you don’t like Metallica. Spin.com has da exclusive scoop.

Dolly Parton, Radio City Music Hall, NYC. May 1, 2008.

Posted in Radio City Music Hall on May 15th, 2008 by Ultragrrrl

I can’t fucking believe that I forgot to post Andrew Borin’s fucking incredible Dolly Parton review. He’s so funny, that I think he will have his own column in the coming weeks on this blog. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll continue reading for his review AND a video from the night! WARNING: he wrote this while drunk. I didn’t ask him to re-edit it because then you’ll get to feel as fucked up as he was:

If you missed American Idol last night, you missed (and this is putting it mildly) one hell of a performance from former Idol contestant Fantasia Barrino. Too bad hers is the most exciting performance of the season thus far. Gawker has the vid.

Conor Oberst is realeasing a solo album, out on August 4th. I’m glad he’s branching out, it’ll be interesting to see how he fares now that he’s escaped from under the shadow of….all those other influential people in Bright Eyes.

Oh la la. Looks like Lily Allen has been doing some all over tanning work in the south of France. And I mean all over.

So…a “fat girl” finally wins America’s Next Top Model. Only Dlisted doesn’t think the fight was quite fair. Rumor has it that winner Whitney didn’t start out as the curvaceous babe she purports herself to be.

The latest installment of the addictive 3 1/3 Series that features in depth analysis of seminal albums in mini-book form is out with their latest installment (#56), Black Sabbath’s Master of Reality. Author John Darnielle will be doing a reading at Housingworks Used Book Cafe on Saturday at 7pm. Get out your devil horns.

We all remember the times we laid on the floor of our bedrooms and stare at album covers all day long, but did you ever wonder what was going on outside the frame? Well, this guy did and came up with some pretty hilarious ideas.

Hot Chip are going on tour….again! I would say that I’m getting tired of them…but their just too damn catchy. They are coming to NYC in October to Terminal 5 (best venue ever!….NOT). You can get more info on Spin.com

The Vortex Tour - Erykah Badu and The Roots, Radio City Music Hall, NYC. May 9, 2008

Posted in Radio City Music Hall on May 14th, 2008 by Ultragrrrl

Erykah Badu is a live wire of epic proportions and the Roots are the best major chilled out Hip Hop group-featuring-a-live-band. Almack contributor KJI went to Radio City to check out the scene while we were getting our eyeliner-cryface on at the My Chem/TBS show:

The collective successes of Erykah Badu and the Roots are nothing short of a cultural phenomenon – cultivated by the dramatic opening of the Hip-Hop mind over the past decade or so. The living legends’ abilities to seamlessly weave Hip-Hop with live instruments, singing, and constant reinvention made them a divine pairing from the start. Couple that with a long-lasting mutual kinship, and the Vortex Tour was born.

Yelle, Highline Ballroom, NYC. May 3, 2008

Posted in Highline Ballroom, Live Shows on May 14th, 2008 by Ultragrrrl

(While Ultragrrrl is out conquering the universe, we’ll be having some guest reviews, like the following awesomeness from Andrew Borin)

Has anyone ever been to Trailer Park Lounge on 23rd St? Seriously, a pitcher of margaritas is $42 bones and I nearly let out a gay squeal in shock and awe, that is until the bartender told me the pitcher was for 8 people. So that would explain the rest of the events for the night.

After my margs I headed over to Yelle with my friend Katie. Thank Yahweh I found Glen and his friend Daniel in line because the line for ticket HOLDERS was two blocks long. Besides the drinks being overpriced at Highline, I really do enjoy the actual space. Even with that many people waiting outside, the show never seemed that crowded.

Heartsrevolution opened for Yelle; I had seen them open for Crystal Castles at SXSW and was even more impressed this time around. They have a very electronic DIY feel but their lead singer LO has an aggressive stage presence that really ties the group together. Although absent this time around was the Perez Hilton looking girl who was with them at SXSW, not sure what happened to her. Anywho, I really enjoyed their set even though it could have been longer.

For those of you who may not be familiar with Yelle, she’s a singer who hails from France and like Lily Allen gained notoriety via myspace. In America we regard her as a cool electro import but as my nieces and nephews in France would tell you, no one over 14 listens to her, she’s “too cheesy” (ugh youth). She gained notoriety for her song “Short Dick Cuizi” later to be retitled “Je Veux te Voir” which incidentally uses the bass line from 20 Fingers’ “Short Dick Man.” Ok so let’s just stop and gay check: Electro + Bass line from “Short Dick Man” + French chick singer = yeah we’re hitting gay gold here. REDBULL & ADDERALL: YOUR AFTERNOON PICK-ME-UP

Posted in Redbull and Adderall on May 12th, 2008 by Ultragrrrl

The Oohlas did an amazing cover of Bauhaus’ “All I Ever Wanted Was Everything” that is available on their MySpace. I can’t stop listening to it!

And Rhianna did a cover of M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” that can be found on YouTube. I only wish she changed the song up a bit.

Stereogum has a video of the Futureheads doing “Radio Heart” from the back of a black cab.

OMFG NEW NKOTB VIDEO here.

Everyone is covering the fact that David Archuleta’s father isn’t allowed backstage at American Idol anymore, so we are too.

BrooklynVegan covered this weekend’s El-P, Aesop Rock & Dizzee Rascal show at Webster Hall.

TheModernAge went to see Adam Green live in concert and made it home in time for bed.

I still hate Metallica, but just cos of their music.

The Five O’Clock Heroes has their new video for the song “Who” featuring Agyness Dyen on their MySpace page.

Neil Diamond, The Bitter End, NYC. May 8, 2008.

Posted in Bitter End, MySpace Secret Show on May 10th, 2008 by Ultragrrrl

I’ve been dying to see Neil Diamond play for like 6 years now. I don’t know when I became a fan of his music, but it happened and it happened strong. He’s got about 16 albums out, and so it can be somewhat cumbersome to comb through those albums for the best stuff. I put out book called The Pocket DJ which has the best of his songs in there. Or you could download the iTunes Essentials. They’re pretty fucking amazing songs and I cry every time I hear “Red Red Wine.” I like to refer to him as the Jewish Elvis.

Clinic, Williamsburg Music Hall, Brooklyn, NY. May 8, 2008.

Posted in Williamsburg Music Hall on May 10th, 2008 by Ultragrrrl

Samantha Moore went to see Clinic on Thursday and wrote a review:

I had never heard Clinic’s music up until last night. I had heard of them many times, in magazines, on blogs, on the street. But I had never heard a clear definition of their sound. Some people (ahem, ohmyrockness) says they sound like a “post-OK Computer Radiohead”. This means almost nothing to me mostly because Kid A and Hail to the Thief are not records I listen to very often (please don’t shoot me). Others (ahem Pitchfork) calls them “recombinant rock”….uh….okay. So I really didn’t know what to expect when I turned up at Music Hall (by myself because all of my friends are in the midst of finals….something I somehow miraculously avoided).

Taking Back Sunday & My Chemical Romance, Madison Square Garden, NYC. May 9, 2008.

Posted in After Party, Hanger Bar, Madison Square Garden on May 10th, 2008 by Ultragrrrl

Are things still monumental when you’re expecting them to happen? For instance, back in 2002 when I was seeing My Chemical Romance at small clubs with like 10 people, I always knew they would eventually be playing Madison Square Garden. I really had no doubt in my mind about it. So when they played last night, headlining a sold out show at MSG, was I surprised? No. Was I proud? You bet.

I was also beaming with pride while watching my very dear friend Matt Rubano on stage playing bass in his band Taking Back Sunday. Like a series of synchronized explosives on stage, I don’t think I’ve ever seen them play a better sounding and more energetic show. You could tell, that with out a doubt, the band was proud to be there. Fuck, they’d be ridiculous not to be.

Remixes for MGMT’s “Time To Pretend” are on BrooklynVegan.

BrooklynVegan has photos of last night’s High Places show at Bowery Ballroom.

ELLE OH ELLE at Liam Gallagher’s new hair.

Sadly, a 13-year-old girl hanged herself , but since she was a fan of MCR, it’s assumed they were the cause.
