The Pocket Karaoke Book Release Party, Angels & Kings, NYC. 3/3/08
We’re probably not going to be recovering anytime soon from last night’s book release party for my newest book, the Pocket Karaoke. I’m hungover as sin and dying.
The night started off with just me, my bf Brandon, and my friends Matt, Casey, and Sarah hanging out at my apt, listening to Wilco and drinking CokeZero and Champagne… cos that’s how we roll. Then Matt Rubano came over and brought my purse (which i had accidently left at Frank’s restaurant earlier in the day). He said the best thing about the East Village is that nobody even notices when you’re walking around with a purse, so he’s had it with him the whole day. I fully expect to find some dodgy purchases on my credit card. Mikey Way and his wife Alicia showed up shortly after and we all drank more and more champagne. My buddy Vin showed up and downed a bottle of red wine in 10 minutes.

We then went down to Angels & Kings to judge a Karaoke competition at the party being held in celebration of my book’s release. It was hosted by my favorite karaoke mc’s Karaoke Killed the Cat, and the judging panel included Me, Mikey, Matt, Steven Smith from FUSE, and Erin from OK Magazine. Even my mom was there! Oh, and there was complimentary bottle service at our table, and since Mikey and Steven dont drink, i drank for them.
My brother Lawrence was the first to perform, doing Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust” and causing people to look in disbelief on his actual ability to sing. I can’t sing. I am tone deaf, but that didnt stop me from getting up there myself to sing My Chemical Romance’s “Helena”. At one point someone handed me a chihuahua and i did my best ozzy with the pooch, who had no reaction whatsoever, and then eyeing an empty icebucket, i attempted to put it on my head like the drunk dude at the party wearing a lampshade… only to find it filled with cold water from the air conditioner. So i was soaked in no time.
The performers were all amazing and several people had perfect scores, but by 1am, only 3 of those people were left, so they took the stage to get the audience vote on who should take 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. The third place winner got a bunch of old jewelry that i was tossing out. haha.
