Duke Spirit, Bowery Ballroom, 4/8/2008

A couple weeks ago, my brother Lawrence wrote a review of the Raveonette’s show which read more like a love letter than a review. It inspired me to write my review of the Duke Spirit show in the same way, because readers, I am in love, and I think they could be the next Verve. No joke.

Read the love letter after the jump:

Dear Leila,

I first saw the Duke Spirit in 2004 or 2005 when my friend Imran Ahmed took me to see you guys play at a small ULU gig. I stood up front so I could see your face because from where I was standing, all I could see was your gorgeous blond hair waving to and fro as your sexy voice carried through the air.

You were amazing that night and I got on your mailing list and bought some pins and stuff and I don’t think Imran believed me when I thanked him about a 1000 times for taking me to the show. Well, I owe Imran another call because your show at Bowery Ballroom on the 8th was fucking MAGICAL. Oh my god. It felt like I was at prom and you were my date. I just watched you on stage and felt this incredible connection. Like when you sung the songs you fucking meant those words and you were singing them just for me, but everyone else there thought you were singing those words just for them too and that’s ok because they were dancing and man, the looks on their faces mustve been a mirror of mine because they were smiling from ear to ear like they’d been let out of prison.

I am I love with you. Will you be my non-sexual girlfriend?

That spakly gold getup that you were wearing was fucking sensational. I loved your platinum black boots as well,a d whenever you got up on your tippy toes you looked like a ballerina.

I know you had a great time too! You kept on telling the audience that you felt a great vibe in the room and I know the felt it back. You were laughing with us, dancing with us, making us feel special. I think my favorite part of the night was during this song when the disco ball made me feel like I was slow dancing with you. I bet a bunch of girls lost their virginity that night because of this moment during “Soveriegn”:

Speaking of the girls… I’m straight and everything, but what was with the audience of the cutest girls on the planet?! It was like 80% girls, and 100% of them were cute/hot. Like totally legit in the looks dept. WTF?! Ooooh, I know…. they all wanted to be you, that why they looked so good.

By the way, I think that was one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time. During your encore I threw my camera down and was like “fuck this!” and just started dancing and jumping up and down like it was 2003 again. I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs.

From the sound of these videos, you were pitch perfect. You sang all your parts amazingly, and oh my God, the boys in your band are fucking spectacular. If I can’t marry you, I’ll gladly take any of them.

Love,
Sarah Lewitinn
