The Teenagers, Bowery Ballroom. May 5, 2008.

Lauren Mooney took a moment to stop munching on Cinqo De Mayo BBQ in order to check out Paris’ very own Teenagers. Zoot
alors!

(by the way, you can click that image of them above to be higher res since that girl in the white has a God given ass that needs to be appreciated by all - Ultragrrrl)

Right when I got to the Bowery Ballroom for the Teenagers there were these girls that drunkenly stumbled into the bathroom and locked themselves into stalls while having a conversation:

“There’s like way too many stripes in here,” Stall 1 said as I looked down at my striped cardigan.

“Agreed,” Stall 2 said.

“This isn’t exactly my era,” said Stall 1.

“…You mean scene?” asked Stall 2.

Laughter from both stalls, “Yah that’s what I meant,” said Stall 1.

I surveyed the rest of the audience as I left the bathroom and noticed a lot of sunglasses indoors. I sadly didn’t arrive late enough to miss Team Robespierre. They call themselves “new punk” and make me wish I never left the Cinco de Mayo BBQ I was pigging out at an hour before.

I’ve been listening to the Teenagers for awhile now, so I’ve built up tonight’s performance in my head which is never a good thing, unless the band delivers. And besides the cute parisian attitude (the kind of parisians that shout they “love new york!”) the show really isn’t all that exciting.

Did I mention that the Cinco de Mayo BBQ was being put on by a celebrity chef? Sigh! All I could hear was the super loud guitars and the only lyrics I could make out were the ones I knew.

During “Homecoming,” which is the post-modern version of “Summer Lovin” from Grease (complete with a more-than-kissing cousins twist) — the band brought a bunch of girls from the audience onstage. The lead-singer said “Don’t be shy,” and then corrected himself and said something like, “Oh you only have to say that to French girls, American girls aren’t shy!” Ew! I’m sure there are some French sluts out there!

I kept wanting to forgive the poor live performance based on the fact that they were so cute, but really I just could’ve been listening to this on my headphones and having a better time.

After the performance two girls with American Apparel braided headbands were asking to take a polaroid with the band — and I bailed. Maybe my mantra needs to be “Don’t get jaded, don’t get jaded, don’t get jaded.”
