Diggnation at Studio B, and High Voltage! at the Annex, Brooklyn/NYC. May 4, 2008.

Our buddy Meik went to the Diggnation party AND High Voltage! because he rules and likes to go to things that rule. Here’s his write up:

Diggnation at Studio B
This photo is from Studio B but it’s not from a dance party or rave.
If you don’t know by now besides being a part time fabricator and user of various aliases(see James Frey). I am also pretty nerdish(Video games and tech). No, really you have no clue. With that I headed out to Studio B for the first time. Studio B is in an industrial section that I would compare to the Township parks and recreation headquarters near where my parents live in Jersey.

I’ll explain the event to you quickly. Two guys from G4’s Attack of the Show started a podcast about 2 years ago called Diggnation. I brushed by them like two weeks prior while on a trip to Vegas at Black Jack Table. I was 90% sure I saw video game vixen Morgan Webb that day as well, oh sweet fate. Anyways, Diggnation is like Wayne’s World but Alex Albrect and Kevin Rose sit around and talk music, beer, entertainment but mainly technology as decided topics from their social networking site Digg.com which is part of Revision3. Blah Blah blah new media, science and turtles running through tunnels create the interwebs.

Walking to Studio B I thought, hey maybe there might be a bunch of folks here to check it out. Yeah once I saw the white building I caught the massive line which wrapped around 3 or 4 different street blocks. Kids, adults, nerds, suits, techies, media and even the Dreamy Alex Blagg. I was going to grab him for a photo during the event but he was mid beer run. Grabbing a blogger mid-beer run is like shining a light into the eye of a sleeping beer. Not safe.
Instead I got a photo of this guy

Studio B is great venue for DJ’s with it’s 50′ DJ booth but their stage is maybe 11 feet wide possibly longer.

So when you have projectors, a huge VIP section and tons of kids carrying laptops and other tech gear the view gets skewed.
The show started off with your usual hyping from a CEO.

Then Kevin Rose came to the stage for a brief hello.

If you don’t know who is get on board.
Part Steve Jobs via his apple appreciation and internet pioneer for his creation of digg.com.
Kevin was joined by digg partner Jay Adelson to break down how the show would run. Kids were screaming the whole entire time even booing when the projectors showed Zune logos, who is one of the events major sponsors. This jeering changed dramatically when Kevin and Alex said they had some free ones to give out. Then you heard 1000 boos turn in to cheers in a second.
This guy got so amped he threw up the horns
The Horns....

Girls got on stage and were drinking shots at different intervals.
Kids swarming Alex and Kevin for photos after the show.
The set featured many product tosses to the crowd along with T-Shirts, stickers, and posters.
Stories that were highlighted included the Firefox NES adaptation, A scandalous Wii Fit video, a wife destroying her husbands DVD collection and more. The show like any of their live broadcasts follow the guys have great interaction with the crowd. Equipment such as their wireless mics breaking down 2 minutes before the show. Yelling at the crew in a very humorous and so many inside jokes you would be clueless had you just randomly showed. Gradually getting slight intoxicated and getting in diversionary discussions about girls, relationships, and technology. It was a bit male centric but both Kevin and Alex were surprised by the amount of women in attendance.

There were some amazing photos…
Like the guy with a hockey helmet that had a red light attached.
I didn’t have a good view of the stage but I found this hole in a curtain
Alex Albrecht riling up the crowd

You may have seen him previously in Dell commercials and other randomness.
He did an online show called Ctrl+Alt+Chicken and has been a guest star on Tiki Bar TV.

After the live show they had Brooklyn band Bears Repeating peform on stage while the photos session were going on. Two swarms of 100 kids surrounding Alex and Kevin for photos. I was about to write them off as a two piece jammy band. And then they did a cover of Radiohead’s “I might be wrong” Which I think Has 4 or 5 guitar tracks on the song and they made it sound pretty good live. Their sound is a mixture of Violent Femmes meets the Shins with a dash of indie sprinkles. Not be confused with indie jimmies. I’ll make a visit to their myspace page again later. I thought there guitarist played barefoot. I get really confuse while some musicians play with out any footwear sometimes. But that’s just a mystery I’ll never understand.

This was an OK photo but I am post it because I fell off of a 2 ft mini flight of steps.
Outcome was a massive right ankle sprain.

Like any normal person I should have headed home from this. But ah ha!!! I am a man at sea even if it’s just navigating the various sides of the Hudson and rather then the Bering Sea. I decided to jump an L back to the big island. A trip down to the Annex for High Voltage to watch some kids dance and listen to Dimitry!!!, Prince Terrence, and Heavy Hitter Induce. He had the raddest argyle newsboy cap that had bright pastel colors(Think the Ting Tings Great DJ video). Most of my photos from HV came out abstract because I was shooting next to the security and flash was playing jokes on me..
