Almack’s Presents… NickyDigital.com

Posted in Live Photos, Live Shows, NickyDigital on July 1st, 2008 by Ultragrrrl

We love our buddy NickyDigital so much that we gave him his own feature. Every few days we’ll feature something music related that he put up on his site. It’s fun to share things that friends are up to.

Nicky went to see Duran Duran with the rest of the Lower East Side and got this fantastic video:

Check out Nicky’s photos of Duran Duran.

Dawn Landes, Mercury Lounge, NYC. June 15, 2008.

Posted in Live Photos, Live Shows, Mercury Lounge on June 17th, 2008 by Ultragrrrl

The delightful Lauren Mooney went to see Dawn Landes at Mercury Lounge on June 15th. It was raining like a mofo, so she’s obviously a super trooper. Here is her review:

NOTE: If you were walking around Williamsburg on Saturday and wondered where all the hipsters were — they were either in Central Park getting soaked or holed up in nooks and crannies uptown trying to stay dry. VAMPIRE WEEKEND and a rainstorm. The things people do to be cool — but not me, not me. Aha.

Redbull & Adderall: Your Afternoon Pick-Me-Up

Posted in Live Shows on June 5th, 2008 by Ultragrrrl

Tilly & the Wall have made a new video for the song “Pot Kettle Black” with director Alan Tanner. Stereogum has the exclusive premier of the video. You can even legally download a mp3 of “Pot Kettle Black” Here. Also, if that’s not fun enough, Tilly & the Wall recently performed their very own version of the “ABC Song” in a music video slated to be featured in the forthcoming 39th season of Sesame Street, set to air this fall.

Speaking of legal and free music stuff, Nine Inch Nails are offering a free tour EP! The EP contains five high quality, DRM-free, fully-tagged MP3 files from A Place to Bury Strangers, Does it Offend You, Yeah?, Crystal Castles, Deerhunter, and Nine Inch Nails (of course). Your download will also include cover art and a pack of digital extras. Just go here.

Good news for Weezer fans… you can now get their new album on iTunes plus five bonus tracks for $12.99. I haven’t checked it out yet, but i hope it includes the Tay Zonday cover thing they did.

Absolutepunk are reporting that Max Bemis is gonna be appearing on LoveLines… which blows my mind. It’s airing June 12. Whatcha gonna ask?

The R.Kelly trial is getting really weird. RollingStone is reporting that relatives of the girl that’s apparently on the tape, isnt actually the girl. That it’s someone else. I can’t help but think R.Kels totally got them to say that in exchange for limo rides or something. Last night I had a dream about R.Kels, but I think that’s because I was with friends watching his insane live DVD.

A Cappella groups are so so so weird. I think they typically are composed of some weird kids, too. BrooklynVegan has a video of some weir a cappella kids performing Daft Punk… it’s kinda incredible tbh.

Laura at TheModernAge has photos and a video of lastnight’s diggnation thingy.

The Wombats, Blender Theater at Gramercy, NYC. June 3, 2008

Posted in Blender Theater, Live Shows on June 5th, 2008 by Ultragrrrl

The wonderful Yvonne Penzakov went to the Blender theater to check out Almack’s favorites Jukebox the Ghost and the Wombats. Here’s her report:

Last time I was in London The WombatsA Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation made its way into the Tower of Pisa precariously balanced in my arms at Zavvi. Since then I’ve been pogoing around my bedroom to it quite frequently, so I was super excited to get the chance to witness them live and pogo along in real time.

Resident class clowns of the indie world We Are Scientists, made this hilarious informercial about “Brain Thrust Mastery”. I wish every band was as funny as this.

Art space/music venue Galapagos is undergoing remodeling and it’s owners are looking to rename it. If you can think of an awesome new name, you could win a $1000 bar tab and free admission for you and a friend for a year. Brooklyn Vegan has the details.

Holy crap, some people realllly like New Kids on the Block. Best Week Ever did a little investigating on just what kind of people camp out for NKOTB tickets.

Liz Phair will be doing an acoustic performance of her hit album Exile in Guyville on June 25 at Hiro Ballroom. Tickets go on sale this Wednesday. Grrrl Power!

Dreamboat Doherty played in the Celebrity Soccer Six charity tournament this past week and here are some adorable pics of him and his son Astile. Look at those skinny jeans! Sorry you have to hear about P. Doh everyday, but its unavoidable when I’m in charge.

Tokyo Police Club have a kickass new video for their song “In a Cave”.

The apparently extremely marketable Santogold has an advertising deal with Bud Light. You can hear the surprisingly good remix, here.

If you missed American Idol last night, you missed (and this is putting it mildly) one hell of a performance from former Idol contestant Fantasia Barrino. Too bad hers is the most exciting performance of the season thus far. Gawker has the vid.

Conor Oberst is realeasing a solo album, out on August 4th. I’m glad he’s branching out, it’ll be interesting to see how he fares now that he’s escaped from under the shadow of….all those other influential people in Bright Eyes.

Oh la la. Looks like Lily Allen has been doing some all over tanning work in the south of France. And I mean all over.

So…a “fat girl” finally wins America’s Next Top Model. Only Dlisted doesn’t think the fight was quite fair. Rumor has it that winner Whitney didn’t start out as the curvaceous babe she purports herself to be.

The latest installment of the addictive 3 1/3 Series that features in depth analysis of seminal albums in mini-book form is out with their latest installment (#56), Black Sabbath’s Master of Reality. Author John Darnielle will be doing a reading at Housingworks Used Book Cafe on Saturday at 7pm. Get out your devil horns.

We all remember the times we laid on the floor of our bedrooms and stare at album covers all day long, but did you ever wonder what was going on outside the frame? Well, this guy did and came up with some pretty hilarious ideas.

Hot Chip are going on tour….again! I would say that I’m getting tired of them…but their just too damn catchy. They are coming to NYC in October to Terminal 5 (best venue ever!….NOT). You can get more info on Spin.com

Yelle, Highline Ballroom, NYC. May 3, 2008

Posted in Highline Ballroom, Live Shows on May 14th, 2008 by Ultragrrrl

(While Ultragrrrl is out conquering the universe, we’ll be having some guest reviews, like the following awesomeness from Andrew Borin)

Has anyone ever been to Trailer Park Lounge on 23rd St? Seriously, a pitcher of margaritas is $42 bones and I nearly let out a gay squeal in shock and awe, that is until the bartender told me the pitcher was for 8 people. So that would explain the rest of the events for the night.

After my margs I headed over to Yelle with my friend Katie. Thank Yahweh I found Glen and his friend Daniel in line because the line for ticket HOLDERS was two blocks long. Besides the drinks being overpriced at Highline, I really do enjoy the actual space. Even with that many people waiting outside, the show never seemed that crowded.

Heartsrevolution opened for Yelle; I had seen them open for Crystal Castles at SXSW and was even more impressed this time around. They have a very electronic DIY feel but their lead singer LO has an aggressive stage presence that really ties the group together. Although absent this time around was the Perez Hilton looking girl who was with them at SXSW, not sure what happened to her. Anywho, I really enjoyed their set even though it could have been longer.

For those of you who may not be familiar with Yelle, she’s a singer who hails from France and like Lily Allen gained notoriety via myspace. In America we regard her as a cool electro import but as my nieces and nephews in France would tell you, no one over 14 listens to her, she’s “too cheesy” (ugh youth). She gained notoriety for her song “Short Dick Cuizi” later to be retitled “Je Veux te Voir” which incidentally uses the bass line from 20 Fingers’ “Short Dick Man.” Ok so let’s just stop and gay check: Electro + Bass line from “Short Dick Man” + French chick singer = yeah we’re hitting gay gold here. Bamboozle Gossip!

Posted in Live Shows on May 6th, 2008 by Ultragrrrl

OK, just for the record, we had a couple of people/spies running around Bamboozle trying to collect gossip for us.

Brandi C from VH1’s Rock of Love was spotted running around with Chris “Leave Britney Alone” Crocker. We believe they were either part of Jeffree Star’s entourage or with Bret Michaels… either way, they were getting out of someone’s tour bus. Looks like he didnt find his TRUE rock of love afterall.

Ben from Armor for Sleep thinks Lost is a game.

Mat Devine from Kill Hannah was spotted at Beatrice Inn post Bamboozle on Saturday giving a little lipservice to — may we pray that our eyes didn’t decieve our spies — Brenden Urie of Panic at the Disco AND also Kirsten Dunst! Slash fiction come true!

The drummer or bassist of some emo band was seen trying to fend off approximately six different girlfriends from around the country… and his mother. One of the them Hit the Roof.
