Catherine Wheel/Rob Dickenson, Mercury Lounge, NYC. June 23, 2008.

Rob Dickenson, the singer of the incredibly famous 80s band, Catherine Wheel, is back on tour. He looks a bit older but his voice is fucking incredible. I got some video that I’ll try to post later, but in the meantime, here’s photos:

The Young Knives, Mercury Lounge, NYC. June 9, 2008.

Even if the Young Knives sucked (which they most certainly don’t) I would go see them for the in-between song banter alone. The brothers, Henry Dartnall and House of Lords, appear to hate each other and find the stage a prime time to point out the flaws of the other in ways that basically shock and awe.

Dawn Landes, Mercury Lounge, NYC. June 15, 2008.

The delightful Lauren Mooney went to see Dawn Landes at Mercury Lounge on June 15th. It was raining like a mofo, so she’s obviously a super trooper. Here is her review:

NOTE: If you were walking around Williamsburg on Saturday and wondered where all the hipsters were — they were either in Central Park getting soaked or holed up in nooks and crannies uptown trying to stay dry. VAMPIRE WEEKEND and a rainstorm. The things people do to be cool — but not me, not me. Aha.

Paddy Casey, Mercury Lounge, NYC. 4/10/08.

A couple days ago I was watching MTV when they had a new promo for the 52 Artists in 52 Weeks campaign (by the way, the publicity for the campaign is pretty under the radar… I dont think the general public understands what’s going on. they need to brand it better). On the screen was this adorable Irish guy named Paddy Casey with artistic promos that reminded me a lot of 1999. Being a marketers dream, I was watching while on my laptop and immediately purchased his latest album. Then I just happened to check the local listings of shows in the area and found out that he was playing in NYC on Thursday. I made sure I could see him play.

The Ting Tings, Mercury Lounge, NYC, 3/18/08.

Posted in Live Shows, Mercury Lounge, Next Big Thing on March 19th, 2008 by Ultragrrrl

7pm is not a very rock’n'roll time in NYC for a band to play. People are either still in their offices, slaving away at the grindstone and hating life just before their daily commute home. You will have a really hard time convincing the Ting Tings of this. I rolled up to the Mercury Lounge at 7pm expecting to stroll right in, figuring that anyone who was there for the show was already inside, but there was a line half way down the block of hip looking adults who looked like they bailed out of work early to check out the next big thing out of the UK this week.

Dead Trees, Mercury Lounge, NYC. 2/26/08

Posted in Live Shows, Mercury Lounge on February 27th, 2008 by Ultragrrrl

My friend Meridith hit me up over AIM during the afternoon while I was looking up what show I should see that night telling me that this new band called Dead Trees were playing at Mercury Lounge and would I like to join her.

“Yeah, I was actually trying to figure that out right now.”
“Cool, they’re managed by Ryan Gentles.”

Ryan manages the Strokes. He has also managed a lot of really great bands and is sort of like New York’s celebrity manager and only about 26. When someone tells you that he’s got a new act under his belt, you typically perk your ears up… which i did.
