PART 1: IN PHOTOS

Every year I’ve attended Bamboozle I’ve left completely distraught by the ways of the world. What are the kids listening to? What are they wearing? WTF is up with all these “Free Hugs”? And while this year I fell into a flu caused by dehydration (thank you RedBull tent) and couldn’t move, talk, eat, drink or do anything yesterday, I actually had a great time. I was surprised. Mostly because this year found most of the bands being more homogenized than ever, but you know, that’s ok, really. The kids were all smiling and the weather was tolerable and the people I spoke to all had a great time — and were surprised by it! I caught up with Say Anything’s Max Bemis outside his band’s tourbus on Sunday and shared with him my sentiments of fun and was surprised to hear that he shared them.

Aaah!!!! I’m in complete bliss! Tonight is probably one of the most musically amazing packed nights that NYC has ever seen on a non-CMJ evening in YEARS. God, it was just fucking incredible. I am so fucking happy to be alive.

But here goes a shot: Radiohead, Rage Aganst the Machine, Wilco, Nine Inch Nails, the Ting Tings, InnerPartySystem, CSS, Brand New, Duffy, the Postelles, MGMT, Nicole Atkins & The Sea, Does It Offend You, Yeah?, Uffie, and many, many, many more. Typically, when someone goes to SXSW, it’s a 5-3 day adventure of drunkeness, loud music, lines, guestlists, VIPs, and mayhem.

Last year when I went to SXSW, I managed to climb on stage during the Horrors set and get hurled off by the lead singer. I walked away with a concussion that lasted about 5 days. That was AFTER he had dumped a bucket of garbage onto a crowd at the Stolen Transmission showcase the night before, and me and my friend Rob Stevenson some how manage to land in it the center of it.

Dimitry!!!’s High Voltage party on Wednesday nights at the Annex are always an amazing time. Always packed with good looking kids, dancing, socializing, making plans for future collaborations. It’s a great place for people to share new ideas and sounds. It’s also a great place to just let loose.

That’s why it made it a perfect place for performances by New York’s Hearts Revolution and Philly’s InnerPartySystem. Two very edgy bands, displaying reinvented forms of dance music to a group of people who would be incredibly accepting.
